The Improbables · Nation to Glory

Take Bolivia to Glory

“altitude specialists”

The press pack calls Bolivia unbeatable at 3,600 metres; sea level is the issue, and files them as altitude specialists. The bookmakers put them in the improbables at 1000/1 and drifting.

The federation's target

Compete with dignity — a point gets framed

Your spine, as your predecessor's notes describe it

In goal, Carlos Trucco, but at sea level. At the back, a defender with 4,000 metres in his lungs. Running midfield, Erwin Sánchez, but louder. Up front, Etcheverry, el Diablo, but punctual.

One World Cup, forty-odd decisions, no second leg. Pick the shape, name the squad, make the calls from the touchline, and see how far Bolivia can go. Free to play, one sitting, no sign-up.
